Bejeweled was first developed in 2001 and Bejeweled 2 was launched subsequently in 2004. Popcap games initially developed this as a Flash based game Diamond Mine( see wiki).

Popcap says people spend an estimated 600 million hours playing its online casual games.

Bejeweled has also been released for the iPhone.
